Yesterday we hosted a Riverfly event with @bristolavonrt here at @horwood_farm

We have been monitoring the rivers for nearly a year as River Detectives and the next stage was Riverfly Monitoring.

Riverfly monitors play a crucial role in assessing river health by regularly collecting and identifying invertebrate life in rivers. They use a standardized method, involving "kick sampling" and counting eight key indicator species, to determine the water quality of a river. This data is then shared with organizations like the Environment Agency to help identify and address potential pollution issues.

We welcomed teams from Bristol Zoo, local councils and community groups for the training.

We found Herb Paris (Paris quadrifolia, also known as true lover’s knot) on our walk today, through our ancient woodlands.

You can see why these hairs might be irritants and why they shouldn’t be handled!
This is a Yellow-tail moth caterpillar (Euproctis similis)
Eating Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Oak, there’s plenty of food for them all around the farm!

The farm is full of flowers and the bees are loving it 🐝

Looks like the cows are enjoying the wild garlic!

The bee’s are so busy, this year their field is full of cuckoo flowers like never before. A fortnight ago they were loving the willow catkins and now it is the blackthorn blossom that is alive with their buzzing #bee #honeybees #farmwildlife #beesofinstagram #cuckooflower #beehives #horwoodfarm

A really enjoyable day learning all about spring foraging, along with the safe and moral practices. Topping it off with a feast - wild garlic bhaji’s, wild cress/ wild onion/ meadow pea/ cuckoo flower/ wild parsley/ sorrel salad, wild garlic butter on baguettes, along with venison and hawberry ketchup from the farm.

This isn’t any food, this is Horwood Farm food!

Did you know you can eat Cowslips? The flowers are citrusy and the leaves are more bitter but great in a salad. They can be made into tea, but were traditionally used to flavour English wine and medicinally for sleeping problems and coughs.
